Why We Created The BYE Company: Our Mission to Rethink Eye Care
We did not start The BYE Co. in a boardroom. We started it in the gaps between clinics — in car parks, airport lounges and locum consulting rooms, with tired eyes and a growing list of questions we could not answer with anything on the shelf.
Our founder is a practising optometrist. For years he travelled between practices across the UK and over to Northern Ireland, where his wife's family lives. Recycled air, long days and unfamiliar environments made a consistent eye and skin routine almost impossible — and left his own eyes vulnerable to dryness, irritation and styes. Meanwhile, in clinic, patient after patient arrived with the same three complaints. The tools we had to offer them felt out of step with what they actually needed.
This is the story of why we built The BYE Co., what we decided to do differently, and what we are still working on.
The Problem We Kept Seeing Across the Chair
Eye care in the UK has a strange gap in it. There is excellent clinical care for serious disease, and there is a vast beauty industry selling products that go on and around the eyes. Between the two sits the everyday stuff — dry eye, blepharitis, recurring styes, lids that never quite feel clean — and it has been badly served for a long time.
Three complaints, one root cause
The conditions we see most often are not exotic. They are chronic, unglamorous and deeply disruptive:
- Dry, tired eyes — increasingly driven by screen-heavy work, air conditioning and long commutes.
- Blepharitis and lid margin irritation — a hygiene problem more than an infection, and one that returns the moment a routine slips.
- Recurrent styes — often linked to buildup along the lash line from makeup, sweat and daily grime.
What these three share is that they respond to consistent, gentle, daily care — and they are made worse by exactly the kind of harsh ingredients that dominate mass-market products. Alcohol. Fragrance. Preservatives. Ingredients that are fine on a forearm and a genuinely poor idea on an eyelid.
What Rethinking Eye Care Actually Meant
"Rethinking" is an easy word to put in a mission statement. For us it came down to four decisions, each of which made the product harder or more expensive to make.
1. Start with the ingredient list, not the marketing
Every BYE Co. formula is deliberately short. Our BYE STYE Hypochlorous Facial Mist contains electrolysed purified water containing hypochlorous acid — and that is it. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is not a lab novelty; it is a compound your own white blood cells produce to fight bacteria, which is exactly why it is gentle enough for the lid margin while still supporting a clean, balanced skin barrier.
Our BYE DRY EYE Preservative-Free Eye Drops use sodium hyaluronate 0.2% with sodium chloride and water for injection. Preservative-free was non-negotiable: preservatives are one of the most common reasons a drop meant to soothe an irritated eye ends up aggravating it, especially for anyone dosing several times a day. The same drops are safe to use with contact lenses, because the people who need them most are frequently the people wearing lenses.
Every formula we make is free from parabens, artificial fragrance, alcohol and harsh preservatives. If you want the full breakdown, we publish it openly on our ingredients and safety page rather than hiding it behind a leaflet.
2. Design for the routine, not the emergency
Lid hygiene only works if it is done regularly, which means the product has to be genuinely easy to reach for. That thinking shaped BYE BLEPH Biodegradable Eyelid Cleansing Wipes — individually sachetted so they travel, infused with skin-calming electrolysed water and aloe vera leaf extract, and simple enough to use morning and night without thinking about it.
It also shaped the mist. A spray you can use with your eyes closed, that air dries with no rinsing and no wiping, removes almost every excuse not to do it. We have written up the exact technique for all three products on our how to use our products guide, because getting the distance and frequency right matters more than most people expect.
3. Refuse the trade-off between clean and sustainable
Single-use plastic is the default in this category, and we did not want to build a brand on it. So BYE STYE is sold with refills rather than replacements: a 200ml eco refill pouch tops up the bottle you already own instead of shipping you another one. We skip outer cartons entirely, keep formulas minimal so there is less to manufacture, and use UK suppliers wherever we can to cut transport emissions.
We are not going to overclaim here. There is more to do on bottle materials, carbon-conscious delivery and packaging traceability, and we keep an honest running list on our sustainability page. We would rather publish the unfinished version than a polished one that is not true.
4. Stay accountable to the people using it
Being optometrist-founded is only useful if the clinical standard survives contact with commercial pressure. Every product is dermatologically and ophthalmologically tested, cruelty-free and never tested on animals. We back it with a full refund if your skin does not love how it feels — a promise that would be expensive if the formulas did not hold up.
Born in Wales, Built on Restraint
The BYE Co. was founded in Wales, and the place has shaped how we work more than we expected. Our ethos comes down to three words — Clean, Conscious, Kind — and the thread running through all of them is restraint. Knowing what to leave out. Not adding a fragrance because it tests well. Not adding a preservative to buy an extra year of shelf life at the cost of comfort.
Wherever life takes you, clear, comfortable eyes should follow.
That line started as a note-to-self during a week of back-to-back travel. It is now the test we apply to everything: does this help someone maintain clear, comfortable eyes on an ordinary, badly organised day — not just on a good one?
Where We Go From Here
We are a small independent brand, which means we get to make decisions quickly and we do not get to hide behind a department. Community is part of the point: we give back through charitable support because we think real care reaches beyond the bottle.
If you are building an eye care routine for the first time, here is where we would start:
- Cleanse daily. Begin with the BYE STYE Starter Kit, which pairs the mist with a refill so you are set up for months rather than weeks.
- Add lid hygiene if you are prone to blepharitis or styes. Wipes morning and night, a fresh sachet per eye.
- Hydrate as needed. Preservative-free drops throughout the day, particularly on screen-heavy days.
- Stock up if it works. Regular users tend to move to the 3-bottle bundle for home, bag and desk.
You can browse everything we make on our products page, and we have answered the questions we get asked most — including what hypochlorous acid is and how long a bottle lasts after opening — in our FAQs.
And if something is not covered there, please get in touch. Some of the best decisions we have made came from a customer telling us what was still not working. That is genuinely how this brand got started, and it is how we intend to keep improving it.
